As the coronavirus pandemic continues to affect the hotel industry, many properties are concentrating on cleaning and safety protocols for their guests. Most recently, Marriott International announced the launch of the Global Cleanliness Council to amplify cleaning protocols and procedures.

The platform aims to meet the new health and safety challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic, according to Marriott News Center.

“We want our guests to understand what we are doing today and planning for in the near future in the areas of cleanliness, hygiene, and social distancing so that when they walk through the doors of one of our hotels, they know our commitment to their health and safety is our priority,” said Arne Sorenson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Marriott International.

Cleanliness, Revisited

Marriott has a long reputation for high standards of cleanliness. However, with the new realities of the COVID-19 pandemic, they are taking it one step further to advance the company’s efforts in the area of cleanliness.

The Council is partnering with in-house and outside experts specializing in housekeeping, engineering, food safety, occupational health, and associate wellbeing.

Enhanced Technology

Over the next few months, Marriott is rolling out enhanced technologies including electrostatic sprayers with hospital-grade disinfectant to sanitize surfaces. The CDC and WHO recommend these disinfectants, which are proven to treat known pathogens.

Specific Areas of Focus

Marriott will be implementing their new cleaning protocols in the following areas:

  • Surface Areas: Marriott is using hospital-grade disinfectants on all surfaces, including all guest rooms. Additionally, each guest room has disinfectant wipes for guests’ personal use.
  • Guest Contact: Signage is in all lobbies as a reminder for guests to maintain social distancing protocols. All entrances, front desks, elevators, fitness centers, and meeting spaces have hand sanitizing stations. Additionally, some Marriott locations are offering contactless check-in by the use of a phone.
  • Food Safety: All food handlers and supervisors are given training on hygiene and disinfecting. Additionally, Marriott is working on modifying operational policies for in-room dining and new approaches to their buffets.
